SEAI Grant

Grant for Battery

If you are considering adding battery storage to your solar PV system, you may be eligible for the new SEAI Battery Energy Storage System Grant.

Eligible homeowners can receive a flat-rate grant of €600 towards a home battery storage system with a capacity of 5kWh or larger. Batteries below 5kWh are not eligible for this grant.

A solar battery stores excess electricity generated by your PV panels during the day. You can then use this stored solar energy in the evening or at night, helping you maximise self-consumption and reduce your reliance on grid electricity.

If you are installing solar PV panels and battery storage together, you can apply for both grants through a single SEAI application, subject to the scheme rules and your eligibility.

SEAI Battery Grant Eligibility

To qualify for the SEAI battery grant:

  • The battery system must be 5kWh or larger.
  • The property must have an MPRN.
  • The home must have been built and occupied before 2025.
  • The property must not have previously received battery grant funding at the same MPRN.
  • The battery must be installed by an SEAI-registered Solar PV Contractor.
  • You must receive your SEAI Grant Offer before the installation work begins.

Solar battery storage in Ireland typically costs between €3,000 and €7,000 installed, depending on capacity and brand, with a standard 5kWh battery at the lower end and a larger 10kWh unit toward the higher end. Pricing usually includes integration with a compatible hybrid inverter as part of the overall battery storage solution.

Is solar battery storage worth it for Irish homes?

It depends on your household's daily routine. If you're typically out during the day and using most of your electricity in the evening, solar battery storage is well worth it, since it lets you use the power your panels generate at midday rather than exporting it at a lower rate and buying it back later at a higher one.

Is there a grant for solar battery storage in Ireland?

Yes. Since 6 October 2026, SEAI pays a flat €600 grant towards a home battery of 5kWh or larger. You can claim it alongside the solar PV grant of up to €1,800 in a single application, or on its own if you already have solar panels. Your home must have been built and occupied before 2025, the battery must be installed by an SEAI-registered contractor, and you must receive your SEAI grant offer before work begins. Batteries installed with solar PV on a private home also qualify for 0% VAT.

How long does a solar battery last?

Most home solar batteries are warrantied for around 10 years and rated for several thousand charge cycles, with quality lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries commonly lasting 10 to 15 years before performance starts to decline. This is shorter than the 25+ year lifespan of solar panels, so you may need to replace the battery once during your system's lifetime.

Can I add battery storage to an existing solar panel system?

Yes, battery storage solutions can generally be retrofitted to an existing solar PV system, though your installer will need to confirm your inverter is battery-compatible or recommend a hybrid inverter upgrade. It's slightly more cost-effective to install the battery at the same time as your panels, but adding one later is a straightforward upgrade.

Will solar battery storage keep my home running during a power cut?

Standard grid-connected solar systems automatically shut down during a power outage for safety reasons, so without a battery, your panels won't power your home in a cut. A battery storage solution with backup functionality changes this, allowing it to keep essential appliances like fridges, lights, and routers running when the grid goes down.
